Enterprise Output Management – Additional User Case Studies
Barr EOM
By Pate Cantrell
I am just returning from Graph Expo 2012, where the Barr Systems team had the opportunity to meet with many prospects and customers. Traffic was excellent at our location in the Xerox stand, and the underlying attitude of our visitors was positive concerning both the outlook for the print industry and the relevancy Barr Systems value proposition for Barr EOM.
While many attendees were interested in understanding the new and exciting technologies that were being exhibited, most companies with whom we spoke were searching for compelling applications that could enable them to improve efficiency and remove costs from the delivery and management of output. The importance of relating successful user stories to illustrate how our customers achieve their goals is really amplified in a tradeshow environment, so I am happy to share a few more case studies with you in this article. Secure printing is always a “hot” topic; so the use cases below detail how some customers deploy Barr EOM to address this issue.
Use Case 1
Secure Office Print – Defense contractor
- Challenges: In an environment consisting of 1,000s of networked printers, this large defense contractor wanted to ensure that secured documents were only printed on authorized secure printers
- Description: Security is of paramount concern in many industries, but especially with defense industry. The confidential and sensitive nature of the work that they perform on behalf of the DOD, DARPA, etc. requires high levels of security surrounding the dissemination of information. Secured documents must not be printed on unsecure devices.
- Solution: Barr EOM port monitors are installed on the Windows print servers that handle the network printing. A rule is created that parses the lower section of each page to be printed. If a specific word combination is detected (for example, “Classified”) the document is only allowed to be printed if it is routed to one of the designated secure print devices.
Use Case 2
Office Print, Security Audit – Cash Advance firm
- Challenge: Create electronic copies of all printed documents for subsequent auditing for potential security breaches and improper handling of customer financial information.
- Description: This customer has deployed hundreds of office printers at various locations to support their printing needs. As they deal with personal financial information and the distribution of millions of dollars to their customers, potential security breaches are a real concern. They want to keep copies of all office print for investigations into potential security breaches.
- Solution: Barr EOM port monitors are installed on the Windows print servers that handle the network printing. For every document that is printed, a PDF copy is created and retained for six months to enable security reviews to be conducted.
